Good afternoon, Gators! It's Monday, July 21, 2025, and here's what's happening at the University of Florida.
First, let's talk about the weather. Currently, it's 80 degrees with rain in Gainesville. Expect temperatures to rise throughout the day, reaching a high of 95 degrees by mid-afternoon. There's a chance of thunderstorms this evening, so keep an umbrella handy.
In university news, the UF Board of Trustees is considering a proposal to increase out-of-state student fees by 10%. If approved at their special meeting on Wednesday, July 23, the increase will take effect in the Fall 2025 semester. This adjustment aims to address rising operational costs and ensure all students contribute equitably to UF's educational experience. In-state students will not be affected by this change.
Leadership changes are also underway. Dr. Warren Dixon has been appointed interim dean of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, effective July 11. Dr. Dixon has been with UF since 2004 and previously served as chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
Additionally, Dr. Robert G. Ingram will become the interim director of the Hamilton School of Classical and Civic Education starting August 1. Dr. Ingram has been with UF since 2022 and brings extensive experience from his tenure at Ohio University.
In the library system, Dean Judy Russell is stepping down this month after 18 years of service. Under her leadership, the George A. Smathers Libraries have expanded significantly, enhancing both print and digital collections.
Speaking of the Smathers Libraries, they are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. A special episode of WUFT's "Greater Good" series aired on June 27, highlighting the libraries' history and their commitment to providing access to a vast array of materials, both in person and online.
In research news, the McKnight Brain Institute recently highlighted Dr. Paola Giusti-Rodriguez, an investigator with UF’s Center for OCD, Anxiety, and Related Disorders. Her work focuses on advancing the understanding of conditions such as autism and schizophrenia.
That's all for today's update. Stay safe, stay informed, and as always, Go Gators!

Good morning, Gators! It's Monday, July 21, 2025, and here's what's happening at the University of Florida.
The University of Florida is making significant strides in expanding its presence in Jacksonville. The Jacksonville City Council has unanimously approved the transfer of over 20 acres in the LaVilla area to UF, along with an additional $50 million in funding. This investment aims to establish a new graduate campus downtown, positioning Jacksonville as a national hub for talent and innovation.
In Gainesville, the Malachowsky Hall for Data Science & Information Technology officially opened its doors in November 2023. Named after UF alumnus and Nvidia co-founder Chris Malachowsky, this seven-story, 263,440-square-foot building serves as a multidisciplinary hub for STEM fields, particularly data science, information technology, and artificial intelligence. The facility houses spaces for several of the university's colleges and departments, including the College of Engineering, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Medicine.
The UF College of Education has climbed to No. 4 among public graduate education schools and No. 6 overall in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report rankings. With top-ranked online programs and nationally recognized specialties, UF continues to shape the future of education through innovation, research, and impact.
Additionally, the College of Education has been recognized as a national leader in online education, achieving one of the top two spots in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Online Graduate Education Programs for the tenth consecutive year.
In sports news, Florida Gators head basketball coach Todd Golden has secured a significant contract extension, now set to earn $40.5 million through the 2030-31 season. Golden, 39, recently led Florida to its third national championship with a close 65-63 victory over Houston on April 7, becoming the youngest title-winning coach since Jim Valvano. Since taking over in 2022, Golden has compiled a 76-33 record, including an impressive 36-4 mark during the 2024-25 season.
Less than a month after UF’s Eckhoff Steel Bridge Team made history by capturing its fifth consecutive national title, another UF civil engineering team paddled its way to its fifth national title (four in the last six years).
UF researchers are at the forefront of artificial intelligence applications. A team of graduate students and faculty, known as the PreventiGators, used machine learning and the HiPerGator supercomputer to analyze thousands of youth profiles and identify early predictors of tobacco use, including social media exposure and stress beliefs. Their work aims to enable targeted prevention strategies, offering a more precise and proactive approach to combating one of the nation’s leading causes of preventable death.
In another innovative project, UF researchers created a life-size virtual replica of a strawberry field, training AI models entirely on simulated data. This approach achieved 92% accuracy in fruit detection and commercial-grade size estimation without real-world images, accelerating innovation and reducing labor and expenses in agricultural technology development.
The University of Florida has been recognized by Forbes as one of 10 public “New Ivies” for producing exceptional and highly employable graduates. UF is the only Florida institution on the list.
However, in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, UF dropped one position to No. 7 among the nation’s public universities and two spots to No. 30 nationally among private and public schools. The state’s flagship university was tied at 7th with the University of Texas-Austin among all public schools and tied at 30th with New York University nationally out of 436 schools. UF was ranked as high as No. 5 among public schools two years ago.
The University of Florida and the University of Florida Police Department have reached an agreement on a new collective bargaining contract, granting a $13,000 raise across the board for bargaining unit members. This resolution comes after months of negotiations and aims to address concerns over officers' salaries.
Looking ahead, Gainesville can expect mostly sunny skies with temperatures reaching up to 94°F (35°C) today. However, be prepared for potential thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening hours. Stay hydrated and keep an umbrella handy.
That's all for today's update. Stay safe, stay informed, and as always, Go Gators!
